As the United Way of Coastal Carolina turns the page on a new chapter, the organization is preparing to welcome its next leader. Following the retirement of longtime Executive Director Sandra Phelps, who served for an impressive 25 years, a seasoned nonprofit professional is set to take the helm this March. With over 30 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and a deep-rooted passion for community impact, the incoming executive director is poised to build upon United Way’s legacy while bringing fresh energy and innovation to the role.

Bob Gragson brings an extensive background in nonprofit leadership, including over 17 years with United Way organizations across the country. Having served as the chief executive overseeing United Way fundraising efforts for over a decade, Gragson has honed the skills necessary to drive strategic growth, foster community partnerships, and secure vital resources for those in need. His career spans a diverse range of nonprofit experiences, from leading large-scale community projects to directing operations for both small grassroots initiatives and multimillion-dollar organizations. Additionally, he is a former business owner with an MBA. Although not originally from New Bern, he previously has studied and worked in the Carolinas.

“I am eager to bring my passion and dedication for United Way to United Way of Coastal Carolina,” he shared. “United Way’s mission aligns perfectly with my values, and I look forward to working alongside the incredible volunteers and supporters to serve the Coastal Carolina community.”

Gragson’s expertise in strategic planning and community collaboration has also led to the creation of impactful initiatives, including the formation of an adult literacy program in a community previously lacking such a resource. This ability to identify pressing needs and mobilize resources for sustainable solutions will be a tremendous asset to United Way of Coastal Carolina.

Beyond his professional achievements, he is deeply committed to community service. Over the years, he has actively participated in Rotary Clubs, delivering club and community service initiatives, and served as a volunteer community organizer. His leadership experience extends to serving on multiple nonprofit boards, including three years on a Chamber of Commerce board of directors—one of which was as board president.

United Way Board President, Tony Norwood says, “Bob’s vision aligns seamlessly with the organization’s mission of mobilizing resources, fostering collaboration and improving lives.”

As the new executive director steps into this leadership role, the United Way of Coastal Carolina is set to embark on an exciting new era—one that promises continued growth, innovation, and unwavering commitment to those it serves.
