A 60th anniversary is not one commonly celebrated. For Tryon Palace, there are several reasons to make 2019 a year of remembrance. The sheer magnitude and complexity of re-building Tryon Palace is an event worth the reflection. My friend and architectural historian, Peter Sandbeck has said that the re-building of the Palace is a far more interesting story than its original building. The effort took more than two decades, was interrupted by World War II, required houses be purchased and demolished, streets and bridges to be relocated, and funds raised. Plus, the important work of research to lead to the re-building the Palace and gardens.

Our celebration will begin in April with the re-dedication of the Kellenberger Garden and the opening of a new exhibit of decorative arts, the Guion Exhibit Gallery. Each event this year will highlight the many accomplishments of Tryon Palace over the past 60 years

In 2020, we will mark the 100th anniversary of woman’s suffrage.  Statewide, institutions will be looking at how women have shaped and changed North Carolina.  Minnette Chapman Duffy, May Gordon Kellenberger, Maude Moore Latham, Virginia Horne and Elizabeth Horne all received the Cannon Cup for their work re-building Tryon Palace.  The Cannon Cup is North Carolina’s highest award and the impact these women have made is powerful. It is important to remember their work and be inspired by their dedication to a lofty goal. Revisit Tryon Palace this year even if you have been a frequent visitor!
