New Bern is a city drenched in history. For over 300 years we have been evolving, growing and re-defining our cultural identity. One of the challenges for the leaders on our community is to shape how we are perceived by people outside our immediate circle, and to draw in visitors to downtown New Bern in order boost our economic development and viability.
One of entities that leads that charge is the Tourism Development Authority (TDA) and Visit New Bern, led by Executive Director, Melissa Riggle. TDA has recently formed a Sports and Events Committee, whose task has been to identify opportunities for sports-leisure events in Craven County, in order to increase visitation and overnight stays. The events are designed to enrich the lives of our local community, but also boost activity in downtown during slower seasons of the year. “The committee decided that Veteran’s Day weekend was an ideal time for local merchants, hotel and restaurants to get a burst of visitors,” says Melissa Riggle.
It was in this spirit that a new event, The Trail to Tryon, was born. On November 12, 2022, the Sports and Events Committee will host the first-ever Trail to Tryon weekend, which includes a half marathon, 10k and 5k race, each of which offers both in-person and virtual options for participation. The race begins at Tryon Palace, follows through historic downtown New Bern, ending with a waterfront celebration at the finish line.
“Sports tourism has seen a significant uptick in popularity post-pandemic,” says Melissa Riggle. “New Bern is very well-positioned with assets that make us a premiere destination for various sporting events. The vision for Trail to Tryon was to create an event experience that would attract visitors and guests from out of town, as well as our local community. We have put together competitive yet scenic routes for participants throughout our historic downtown showcasing the beauty and appeal of our waterfront city. Our Finish Line celebration will offer participants, their families and locals, entertainment, food and brews on Bate Commons at the NC History Center. Complimentary shuttle service will be provided from the hotels to downtown for guests to explore our attractions, shops, and restaurants. Festivities will continue with shuttle stops into our Beer District/Beermuda Triangle until 11pm. We cannot wait to kick off this inaugural event and look forward to seeing everyone there!”
The weekend will be full of activities for locals and visitors alike, while also honoring the important and significance of Veteran’s Day. A portion of the race proceeds will go to the local American Legion Post 539, which provides life-changing assistance and guidance for veterans, military personnel and their families year-round.
Dan Roberts, who is the Craven County Tourism Development Authority Board Chair, says “We are pleased to have this event coming together. The Sports and Events committee has provided invaluable insights throughout the planning process. We hope that Trail to Tryon will be a new experience for visitors and community members to enjoy for years to come.”
The local community is invited to participate by running the routes, volunteering at the event or coming to support the participants and enjoy the celebration. For more information, go to visitnewbern.com for the calendar of events, sign up at Trail to Tryon or call 252-637-9400.
