Owners: Sam and Susie Park
Pet: Rakan
Rakan is a 22-month-old Turkish Kendal, the national dog of Turkey.
This enormous dog weighs a staggering 160 pounds, 34 ¾ inches high, and 58 inches long.
Rakan is one of two highly recognized dogs in downtown New Bern, including Rakan’s brother, Octavius, who is a European Doberman. These two colossal dogs walk all over New Bern daily in their special boots, carrying their favorite toys, and providing love and comfort for residents and visitors alike.
“Rakan loves going on his walks three times a day, approximately 50 miles a week with his brother and his puppy friends, Hobby and Dusty,” says Susie. “He enjoys making everyone in town happy, and receiving lots of cuddles and biscuits. Our two dogs love making the trolley tour guests smile and they all wave and try and find them around town. In a sense, Rakan and Octavius are part of the tour because we are everywhere, all the time in New Bern!”
Rakan’s favorite food is fresh Alaskan fish on his meals, and snacks like fresh butcher shop marrow bones, milk bones, jumbo roasted pigs ears and his favorite — baked cows ears. All of these treats keep his breath and teeth smelling sweet and perfectly healthy white.
In addition to all his human friends, Rakan enjoys looking over his flock of cats.
“All pets are special, but the joy he brings to everyone is amazing,” says Susie. “As pet parents, we are blessed with two amazing dogs and cats.”
