Winners of New Bern’s Historic Preservation Awards

Over the holiday season, New Bern said a “big thank you” to eleven people and organizations for their extraordinary commitment and preservation related work.  For its 2018 awards, which is the first full year of this awards program, the New Bern Preservation Foundation presented medals in these categories:

Restoration – Jim and Anne Schout for their Home at 201 Johnson St., New Bern Civic Theatre Organization for Facade Restoration, Town of River Bend for the Red Caboose

Rehabilitation/Adaptive Reuse -The Peterson Family for Wit Clothiers Building, New Bern Firemen’s Museum Organization for the Museum

Craftsmanship – New Bern Clockmakers Association for Tryon Palace Clock

Research and Education – Jim Hodges for Research and Presenting New Bern in Stories and Objects

• Stewardship – Peter and Kathy Adolph for Neighborhood Revitalization such as the City Laundry and More, New Bern Historical Society for Battlefield Park

Lifetime Achievement – Susan Moffat-Thomas for Downtown Revitalization, Earl of Craven Questers for Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Among her many achievements is the restoration of this handsome clock on Pollock Street. When Susan Moffat-Thomas first saw this clock it had been decapitated at its base. Pieces of the clock were in storage. She got Mr. Baxter to donate the clock and got the City to agree to maintain it. Then she raised almost $30,000 to have it restored.
