Because Great Communities Don’t Just Happen

Sometimes it takes a character like Richard Parsons, southern raconteur and bon vivant, to reacquaint us with with a city whose character we love. His elegant sixty-four page photographic essay, Discover New Bern, does just that.

Although not a New Bern native Richard “bowed to fate” and in 1984 bought perhaps the oldest unaltered home in New Bern, the 1771 Mary and Patrick Gordon House at 213 Hancock Street. As Richard says on the book cover, “I’m not from New Bern, but I got here as quick as I could.”

In 2012, as the New Bern Preservation Foundation turned forty, the Board accepted Richard’s offer to create a colorful, affordable book that has become a great gift for both locals and visitors. Featuring more than 100 color photographs, it showcases homes and buildings principally in the downtown historic district. Interior photography captures a rich array of architectural details: stairs, brackets, mouldings, mantels, and fireplaces.

Discover New Bern fits well in a visitor’s suitcase or a mailing envelope. And of course, it is visually pleasing placed directly into a friend’s hand. It costs $19.95 and is available at Mitchell Hardware, the Pepsi Museum Store, the Four C’s, and the Tryon Palace Shop. You can also pick up copies at our office and through our website www.newbernpf.org.

As Richard says, “I hope you love my adopted home — and the pictures of it — as much as I do.”
