Pet: Octavius

Owner: Sam and Susie Park

Octavius is two year old European Doberman who was born in Alabama, and adopted by Sam and Susie while they were living in Washington DC. Octavius made his New Bern “debut” on June 18, 2021, and since then he has become one of the most popular and recognizable pups in downtown!

This handsome boy immediately displays a tremendous amount of strength, but his soft brown eyes shine with kindness, and his friends think of him as a loveable guy.

One of Octavius’ endearing qualities is he likes to carry his toys in his mouth as he goes on walks in New Bern. Somehow, it immediately makes this gentle giant seem approachable. He has a special gift for making people happy and making them smile!

So what’s the difference between an American Doberman Pinscher and a European Doberman? The European Doberman is considered a working dog and is very muscular, energetic, and well-suited for protection. The American Doberman is slender and sleek, more of a show dog than a working breed. Both are ideal as loyal family pets.

His daily walk down Middle Street is the highlight of his day, as well as visiting the farmer’s market every Saturday, where he has plenty of admirers.

“Octavius is the unofficial happiness K9 of New Bern,” says his pet parent, Susie.  “He loves stopping in stores in our downtown, and getting treats from people that work in the shops, and drinking water out of their silver bowls. I think they look forward to seeing him!  It’s funny because we are told daily by people he is the luckiest dog in town because we walk him two miles a day, twice a day, rain or shine. People always say, if I was a dog, I would want to have you as my mom and dad!”
