Pet of the Month: Mae

Owners: Jayce Schmidt and David Burns

Mae is a 16 month-old lovable, sweet and smart mixed breed.

“We get so many questions on what kind of dog she is, so we had her DNA tested,” say pet-parents Jayce Schmidt and David Burns. “We thought for sure that she would have some terrier or German Wired Hair in her – but we were wrong as she is predominately Lab, Poodle, Boxer with some German Shepherd, Pit and 12% Super Mutt (an official category)!”

What’s a Super Mutt mean in terms of dog DNA, you ask? According to EmbarkVet, “Super Mutt appears in results when the best matches to a reference dataset are so small that they can no longer be confidently assigned to any one particular breed.”

Mae was a four month rescue from an agency in Jacksonville where Jayce and David found her and immediately fell in love – bringing her home to her forever home.

Mae is very mischievous and loves her toys. One of her favorite tricks is to repeatedly drop one of her toys off the couch and then demand that one of her owners pick it up and give it back to her. She also has a penchant for finding and taking socks to play with.

She has field dog instincts and loves her daily morning squirrel chases in the park and open areas where she can run. She also delights in a good chew on one of her bone toys after her meals and gets a raw chicken wing every day at lunchtime.

Mae is a super swimmer at the lake and in the inter-coastal waterway and also enjoys cooling off in her own pool during hot days on the back deck.  She loves her crate, and will ‘self-crate’ herself when she needs a nap, like a good pup!
