Garden Lecture “Seeds of Rediscovery”

November 12, 2022 @ 10:30 am

Join us November 12th for our final 2022 Garden Lecture featuring Nancy Strickland Fields (Lumbee), Director and Curator of the Museum of the Southeast American Indian with “Seeds of Rediscovery”. Corn is sacred to Native peoples in the Carolinas. However, over time, many tribes in the North Carolina have lost varieties of their ancestral corn and its role in ceremony. Many of these varieties were thought to have been extinct. Through a serendipitous “pandemic moment”, Ms. Strickland Fields will share how a random inquiry to buy Anson Mills Carolina Gold Rice led to an unexpected discovery that sacred ancestral corn survives! This find resulted in a meaningful corn reclamation program that returned ancestral corn to several tribes in eastern North Carolina.

Suggested donation $3.
