Berne, Switzerland is a small city in the heart of Europe. It is a beautiful medieval town with cobbled streets, ancient architecture, and picturesque views. New Bern, North Carolina is an old colonial town on the banks of the Neuse River. It has a rich history, preserved landmarks, and beautiful parks.
While many in New Bern understand the long and storied relationship between the two, some newcomers and visitors may be surprised to learn about their more-than-300-year-old connection.
In a nutshell, New Bern was founded in 1710 by Swiss and German refugees under the leadership of Baron Christopher DeGraffenried. These Swiss and German Palatines were seeking survival and freedom from the dangers and oppression of a war-torn Europe. New Bern became the only Swiss colony in what was to be the United States. And, unlike some other attempts at colonization by British, French, and Spanish settlers, it thrived and has survived to the present day.
Locals of both cities share pride in the connection. Over many years, dignitaries, business leaders, and common folk from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean have made the 8,522-mile round trip to visit. Berne, or Bern, is a city that is well-known for its beautiful scenery and its rich cultural heritage. The city has been the capital of Switzerland for more than 800 years and it was also the birthplace of the Red Cross.
The history of Berne dates back to 1218 when it is said to have been founded on a crook of the Aare River and two important trade routes. Legend says that a nobleman promised to name the place after the first animal killed during a hunt. “Bear” has been its name and symbol ever since.
With a population of 135,000, picturesque Berne is located in a German-speaking part of central Europe and it’s one of the most important financial centers in the world. It has also been ranked as one of the best places to live in Europe.
In addition to historical ties, the two cities share the same colors [red and black], similar coats-of-arms, and official flags. And both cities are crazy about bears.
