The Salon on Middle is moving down to 220 Middle, in the space that was previously The Boathouse.

With seven stylists, six stylist stations and a brand new drybar, the busiest street in downtown is sure to have even more bustling foot traffic.

Owner Laura Lane opened Salon on Middle in The Shops Above in 2020, bringing only her clients and only two other stylists.  “We didn’t have much when we first started and we felt like the underdog, but we rolled up our sleeves, cleaned up the space and made it work.  Our stylists are really talented and well-trained, and our team is like a family.  Because of that, I think the clients feel happy and relaxed in our salon.  That has been an important factor in our success and creating a loyal following.”

Born in Ohio, Laura grew up in Greensboro, attending Leon’s Beauty School, then followed her husband Chris to New Bern.  “It took sheer determination to get where I am right now.  When the time was right, the new salon literally fell into my lap,” says Laura.

The new location has a fresh remodel with an elegant chandelier window display, new stations, custom lighting, and sleek designs in black, gold, white and olive.  The elegant touches will be juxtaposed with an edgy flair:  a splash of graffiti art and the authenticity of the original hardwood floors.  Laura says, “I liked the idea of the design being both high-brown and low-brow.  It keeps it interesting and unpredictable—and it’s in line with the history of the building, which used to be a saloon on the lower level, while the upstairs was used by Madame Moore and her ladies of the night.  I want the feel of salon to be upscale, but still comfortable and inviting.  Everyone is welcome here, whether they are existing clients or tourists visiting New Bern for the first time.”

The Salon on Middle will continue to offer traditional haircare such as cut, color and treatments for their female clients, but they are also excited about a new focus on men’s grooming for beard trim and care, color, haircuts, treatments and facials with hot towels.

Also new is the drybar—a trend which is popular all over the country.  The drybar includes a wash, dry and style and starts at $45.00.  “For people who have difficulty styling their hair, the dry bar is a great option, and during the really humid months, a nice smooth blow out is refreshing.”
