During February’s Black History Month, the African American Heritage Outreach Interpretive groups from Tryon Palace are busy showcasing New Bern and Tryon Palace’s unique history.  On February 8 at Community Appreciation Day when Tryon Palace is open to the community free of charge, the 35th United States Colored Troops military interpretive group will be at the New Bern Academy, the site of the first mustering of the original regiment, with demonstrations of the life of a USCT soldier.  Members of the group also will be a part of the day’s military timeline on the South Lawn of the Palace. Community Appreciation Day features a genealogy fair and lectures in the North Carolina History Center, while demonstrations of beekeeping and heritage breed horses on the Front Lawn of the Palace.  The event will take place rain or shine from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the North Carolina History Center, Tryon Palace grounds, and the New Bern Academy.

As part of the celebration of North Carolina’s Year of the Woman, the February 20 African American Lecture Series’ topic is …..And Then He Kissed Me!:  The Glory of the Girl Groups.   Singer Tami Tyree performs Motown hit songs by the key women and “girl groups,” who not only shaped the Motown sound of the early-to-late 1960’s, but also influenced American society and culture in a period of social upheaval. Historic narration will provide a backdrop of music.
