October 26, 2019 will be the fifth annual All Hallows’ Eve at Tryon Palace. Games, characters, and activities have been added each year, and this year will be no different. All Hallows’ Eve, now known particularly as Halloween, has changed throughout the years. The one thing that has not changed is dressing up. People even as early as the 8th century would wear masks and costumes, usually made from animal skins, and believed this would scare away the evil spirits. We do not have listed accounts of All Hallows’ Eve being celebrated in the colonies during the Eighteenth Century, but we do know that the term Halloween (as we know it) came into existence around 1785 from a Robert Burns poem. During the Nineteenth Century, however, Halloween started to become more of a tradition here in America and has grown to the holiday it is today. Along with games and candy, this years All Hallows’ Eve will include bounce houses, flying broom trainings, face paintings, and marionette shows. The Headless Horseman may even be seen wandering the grounds in search of Ichabod Crane. The event takes place from 10am-2pm. Children ages 12 and under, who dress in costume, will be admitted for free. Children 13-18 years are $4, and adults are $10. If you are a Tryon Palace Foundation member, this event is free. We do ask that no masks be worn. We hope you will come out and enjoy this family-friendly spooktacular event.
