Owner: Mary Davidson
Pets: Abby & Penny
Two of downtown New Bern’s most recognizable dogs are the “two corgi’s” at The Four C’s, Abby Rose and Penelope. Known more commonly as Abby and Penny, this mother-daughter pair are a much-loved fixture in the community.
Abby is the thirteen year-old mama and Penny is her nine year-old pup.
Abby and Penny are the pets of Mary Davidson, who is the owner of The Four C’s —a local clothing store known for their wide variety of active-wear clothing and accessories for outdoor activities and living. She has owned the shop for over thirty years.
People enjoy seeing the pups when they come in the store. Abby, who is friendly but lately gotten a little antsy and more demanding in her old age, needs more TLC. Penny, who is shy compared to Abby, tends to be more social in the afternoon, but is typically scared of kids. Despite their unique characteristics, people love to come inside and pet them, and give them attention.
“Corgi’s as a rule are full of personality,” says Mary. “The girls have their own fan club in New Bern, made up our employees, my family and friends, and locals who enjoy seeing them on their walks.”
So if you’re making a visit to The Four C’s, and want to bring a treat to the pups, what should be on the menu? The answer: anything. These dogs will eat any kind of scrap from a local restaurant. No preference. So come on by and meet the girls with a little gift in hand.
